While in the Grampians region enjoying the wildlife, schedule a visit to Halls Gap Zoo. Have a great day out with the family as you experience close interaction with a variety of animals. Halls Gap Zoo is situated 6km from the centre of Halls Gap with panoramic views of The Grampians and Pyrenees ranges. As you follow the meandering path you can see a range of Australian native wildlife such as Tasmanian devils, wombats, cockatoos, reptiles and dingoes as well as touch and feed kangaroos and wallabies. Other animals found at Halls Gap Zoo include monkeys, deer, antelope and camels.
Halls Gap Zoo is involved in a number of conservation efforts.
We have been given the honour of holding one of only two populations in Australian zoos (the other being Monarto Zoo in South Australia), a breeding group of South Australian mainland sub-species of Tammar Wallaby. They are part of a captive breeding program that will increase the number of wallabies available for release to suitable sites within their known former range. Due to predation by foxes and clearing of preferred habitat this sub-species of the Tammar Wallaby was listed as ‘extinct in the wild’. Following a comprehensive site selection process, Innes National Park was chosen as the first release site and after a sustained effort in fox control the first wallabies were released in November 2005.
Other conservation programs at Halls Gap Zoo are for Brush-tailed Bettong, Tasmanian devil, Bilby, Bush Stone-Curlew, Quoll and Rock-wallabies.
